Equine Facilitated Learning

Equine Facilitated Learning is a field in which horses are used as a tool for emotional growth and learning. An Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) session is a collaborative effort between a horse, a client, and a horse professional. Sessions can also include a therapist. The focus is NOT on riding, nor on horsemanship. Instead, an EFL session involves activities with horses which require the client or group to apply certain skills.

Horses are used for this type of experiential therapy as they are prey animals, and are thus extremely sensitive to their environments. Horses are honest and respond to situations immediately. Due to the horse’s innate ability to “read” people and respond to a person’s internal state, regardless of the person’s verbal communication, horses react to a person’s cues honestly and directly. This honest reaction provides clients with an opportunity to grow and develop appropriate non-verbal cues and responses. It also provides a canvas for encouragement from a therapist, and an opportunity for the client to work through any social issues that may prevent them from living a more fulfilling life.

EFL addresses a variety of mental health and human development needs. Behavioral issues, depression, anxiety, abuse issues, attention deficit disorder, substance abuse, eating disorders, relationship problems and communication issues are some examples.

EFL can also provide a different, more engaging way of treating academic content. EFL emplowers students to take responsibility for their own learning. For some types of learners, this active learning experience can be the optimal teaching method versus more traditional methods.
